DavisAlec, a human, had a nasty run-in with a brutish pack of werewolves known as the Quad. He bears the bite scar that marks him as the Quad's future prey. Consequently, he tends to keep to himself and holes up during the week of each full moon when the wolf shifters run. He meets the beautiful, golden boy Liam in an abortive casual encounter, and then re-meets Liam through Liam's younger brother. Imagine his surprise and terror when Alec discovers Liam is a werewolf. Of course they fall in love. Of course there are rocky back-stories with which they must grapple on the path to a "mated" relationship. Of course the Quad comes to collect the prey it marked.The interesting shifter-verse Joely Skye creates is set in the modern world. Her werewolves are actual wolves when they are not in human form - as wolves, they can't talk, and they behave, for the most part, like animals with the capacity for human thought. They are born this way (no infecting going on here), it would seem their life spans aren't possessed of longevity greater than a human life span, and it doesn't take anything magical to snuff them (though shifting can heal wounds). As paranormal universes go, this non-gothic one requires less willing suspension of disbelief, and you sometimes find yourself musing that Skye's shifters could exist.Skye's stories tend to favour relationship-building over plot complexity. The primary relationships are tender; the plots are linear and, for the most part, predictable. Her characters are usually loners. Most have a past that includes abuse or damage with which they need to come to terms in order to move forward in love. Capture/rescue is a prominent plot device. This is certainly true for Marked.I developed a lot of affection for Alec and Liam. Skye writes well, with an understanding of her characters and their emotional situations. Their dialogue is satisfying. They act in ways that are consonant with who they are. The sex is loving, sufficiently spicy, but not over-the-top. (If over-the-top is your thing, you may find this a little tame.) This isn't a sex romp with a plot loosely wrapped around it. It's about growing a relationship through a set of circumstances, and sex fits in comfortably along the way. The pacing and development kept me engaged throughout.Other reviewers have said it, and it's true: Skye ends her stories abruptly. I read the Kindle version of this, and when I got to the last page and pressed "next," I was expecting more that wasn't there. It's not that more is actually necessary, because she does resolve everything. I just wanted the story to leave me with that solid feeling of contentment that comes when you don't really want to leave your characters, but it's okay that you must. It's a mark of how involved I became with these characters that I minded leaving them too quickly.Skye doesn't go to great lengths to explain this alternative world; it just is. You might wonder how humans are carriers for shifter genes and how the whole deal works, but you won't find many answers. Skye supplies only what is necessary to the story, so explanatory exposition is at a minimum. I didn't mind this in the least, but if you require all the whys and wherefores, you may feel frustrated.(It's not necessary to read Skye's werewolf stories in chronological order, because each can stand alone. But if order's important to you, start with Marked, then Feral, then Lynx. Lynx actually starts well before Marked and ends after Feral.)3 of 3 people found the following review helpful.Disturbing (and not in the good way)By morehumanthanhumanI really wanted to like this book, but it was unable to follow through on the promise shown in the description.I dislike it when authors withhold critical information from us in order to create a false suspense. If you take us inside a character's mind to show their thoughts, it just isn't good writing to withhold certain types of information from us. We know that Alec is thinking about how his life has been ruined and is constantly afraid. We know that Liam is socially awkward and very worried about his brother. We're inside the thoughts of both men, but we have to wait until way too long in the book to find out why they are the way that they are - and these are the sorts of things they'd definitely be thinking about ("I'm marked for death by werewolves," "I am a werewolf").The sex scenes seemed to be written by somebody who wasn't really clear on how m/m really works. This can be okay - not everything has to be realistic - but they were also monotone. After reading a couple of scenes, you knew how every scene between them was going to play out. This combination really killed the book for me. There was also was a disturbing (for me) element on non-consent. You were never really sure how much Alec was consenting to what was happening with his (much, much stronger) partner. Their initial scene seemed very non-consensual and in a later scene they negotiated fluid bonding . . . but it wasn't really a "negotiation" as much as Liam telling Alec what was going to happen. These scenes weren't sexy to me - they resemble too much what happens to people every day. Liam isn't just stronger, Alec is dependent on him for his very survival. I wish Skye had either made it clear that this was going to be a story based on non-consent themes or stepped back and taken a critical eye at these aspects of the book (I'm not clear if the non-consent was what she was going for here).0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.A human endangered and loved by werewolvesBy Mike HarmsI found this to be both a quick, fun read and an interesting introduction to the loosely connected "Northern Shifters" series. I loved how the story showcased the vulnerability and desire of the young, gay human protagonist in a dangerous world. Fighting his own battles with his libido, a bit of homophobia around him, and a dark encounter in the past, Alec struggles against a potential relationship even before he becomes aware of all of the dangers of the werewolf world. The protagonists' desires for intimacy are nicely interwoven with "normal" reservations about relationships in addition to the need to survive in a world with extremely dangerous and predatory wolves.While overall the writing isn't superb, it was refreshing to see both paranormal and more typically "human" issues wrapped together, including a sometimes halting introduction of a gay protagonist into the very threatening and possibly rewarding world of werewolf mating.See all 34 customer reviews...
