RossVery quick summary...Malora just might be the last human left on Earth. Everyone else just might be a Centaur, a wild animal, a horse or something else.My thoughts...This book was really very different in an amazing kind of way. Within this world that Malora lives in are amazing and beautiful things. Her father rules horses and luckily has taught Malora everything that he knows. Danger is at every turn...it could be the bite of an asp or a poisonous plant or a wild animal. In some cases it is Leatherwings that fall from the sky and relentlessly kill everything and everyone in sight...except for Malora and her beloved horses. And Malora is only saved because her mother sends her off into the bush with warnings to never ever come back. The story of Malora and the horses is lovely. At first it is just Malora and Sky...the only horse not taken by the Leatherwings. But a few years pass and Malora and Sky pick up more and more wild horses. Malora calls them her boys and her girls. She cares for them and protects them and talks to them and trains them. She is as happy as she can be alone in the wild until the day she meets the Centaurs and her entire existence changes. The Centaurs are sort of enthralled with her and she in turn is fascinated by their ways. Their laws and mannerisms are odd and unknown to her but she eventually earns their admiration. Through a heroic act she becomes a sort of pet to the Centaurs. She learns to read and be less wild and wants to be a sort of blacksmith...but the Centaur ruler finds a way for her to use her knowledge of her beloved horses to forge a place among them. The story is kind of long and involved...there are fun parts...you will discover these as you read...there is no advantage to me telling you about them...your eyes will open as the history of the Centaurs and humans are revealed. There are lots of references to a present day society that made me think that this book was sort of oddly Dystopian.I probably was a bit freaked out by the Centaurs...the entire man/horse thing is odd but as I read the book I just became really involved in this vividly imaginative world. At times I thought the story was slow...the middle part...but that could have been because the beginning was so exciting and riveting and sad.It will be interesting to see where the next book finds Malora, her horses and her Centaurs.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.Daughter of the CentaursBy CustomerThis was a very interesting and exciting book. I often times imagine myself as the main character and compare and contrast her to myself. Malora is a strong willed girl who will go so far as to sew her clothes to her body. I would never be able to do that to myself. She wrestles snakes and lions, when I can't even kill a spider with a shoe. Malora tries her best to be accepted among the Centaurs even though one of their laws prohibits hunting. If I were Malora, I most likely would have died alone and never meant Orion.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.Horses and a strong heroine.By Magical horse fanVery interesting read! Most people who love horses (like me),will enjoy this book. Also,I must say that even though this book isn't about dragons it reminded me of the Dragon riders of Pern series. Both series feature wonderful world building.See all 49 customer reviews...
