Millie acknowledged that in this instance, she didn’t need a white knight, but a shadow that could traverse the darkness with the cunning and speed of that lethal viper.”FINAL DECISION:THE STORY: Christopher Argent is a hunter, a hired killer and assasin. Born and raised in Newgate Prison, Christopher is the “coldest, deadliest man in all London.” He is hired to kill Millie LeCour, an actress and mother and supposedly a whore and thief. When he arrives at the theater to kill her, he finds himself entranced by Millie and unable to bring himself to kill for the first time. Instead, Christopher offers Millie a bargain — a night in her bed in exchange for his protection. Millie will do anything to protect her son and her attraction to Christopher makes their bargain palatable and perhaps even desirable.OPINION: Oh, I am a sucker for these dark, dangerous and damaged heroes. Christopher is a man who has lost so much that he desires nothing. He survived a monstrous childhood by shutting out all emotions and being a cold killer. When he sees Millie, her vivacity changes him. Even as he finds himself fascinated, he doesn’t understand what is happening to him. This book chronicles his journey from cold killer to a man who can love. The ability to make a man who kills without remorse a hero is a difficult task, but Byrne does a marvelous job of allowing readers such insight into Christopher that his transformation is believable.Millie is a heroine to admire. Practical, accomplished, ambitious, professional, loving and willing to risk everything for Christopher and her son. She is a professional actress and this book depicts that life in a way that feels organic and real. I especially enjoyed how Millie is not waiting for a man to rescue her. In both this book and in THE HIGHWAYMAN,Byrne depicts women who are making their own way through life by way of their own work and efforts.Dark, romantic and complex, the romance between Christopher and Millie is not for readers looking for a light and humorous read. But for those of us who love our heroes on the edge of being the villain with must angst and drama, this book is for you.WORTH MENTIONING: There are significant appearances by the hero and heroine from the first book in the series, THE HIGHWAYMAN. I was pleased to see how their marriage was going.CONNECTED BOOKS: THE HUNTER is the second book in the Victorian Rebels series. It can be read as a standalone but is better read after the first book in the series.STAR RATING: I give this book 5 stars.NOTE: I received an ARC of this book via Netgalley in order to provide a review. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions contained herein are my own.7 of 7 people found the following review helpful.Dark, angst filled and emotional romance!By BookdivasThis is book two in the The Victorian Rebels Series and I was so excited when I received an ARC from the author and publisher. When I had read about Christopher Ardent in The Highwayman, I thought that I am not going to like this hero, I mean how could you right He is shown to be this cold, ruthless, and unprincipled killer with no feelings. My god, was I wrong. The past that makes Ardent into what he is today is so painful and heart wrenching that you can only imagine how a person can survive that and have a heart and a soul. But when Millie comes into his life by means of a killing contract, he is amazed at how difficult it is for him to kill her. Millie is London's newest and brightest shining star from the stage and her popularity has risen to great heights. There is a mystery serial killer on the loose killing mothers like Millie who have little boys and are then kidnapping all the little boys. The day when Christopher meets Millie to kill her begins their journey, a journey where the most brutal assasin ends up saving her life and she pulls him from darkness into the light. This emotional and dark love story is so gripping that it captures you right from the first page. All the characters written by the author, especially Christopher and Millie are extremely complex and nuanced. You feel the pain, frustration and joy that they both feel as you read the story making this book even more fascinating. The sex scenes are hot and intense but tender and heartbreaking at the same time. I especially adore the scene where Christopher is making love to what he thinks is his "dream" Millie and opens up his heart for the very first time to her. I completely fell in love with Christopher by the end of book and I feel like he won this book for me. This author writes some amazing antiheroes, like Dorian in The Highwayman and now Christopher in this book. If you like antiheroes written by Lisa Kleypas and Elizabeth Hoyt, pick up this book for sure. You will not be disappointed. For myself, I cannot wait to read her next book, The Highlander!* I received this ARC from netgalley and the publisher for an honest review*2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.Wonderful series!By mkpfnWow, I loved this book!!!. I love the series so far and I hope it keeps going but this was the best! I don't usually leave book reviews but I just had to gush about this one. I am a fan of Highland Historical romances and my friend and I trade back and forth and she gave me the Highwayman to read and I loved that so I got her next two books the hunter and the highlander. The Hunter tho I have gone back to again and now I am getting ready to read the whole series again.Kerrigan is a great writer she really did so well developing this character who was introduced in the Highwayman. You really get to understand the bond between him and Dorian the main character in the Highwayman I love that we get to see more of Dorian and Farah's story in this book. Christopher Argent the H in this book is so damaged because of his childhood and all the abuse and torture etc he endured in prison. He is an assasin and does not mind his work He is hired to kill the h in this book and can't go through with it and becomes her and her son's protector. The scenes with him and the son are priceless. The H has a hard time dealing with his attraction and his feelings towards the h. He is used to not feeling anything so he is clueless about what is happening to him and he doesn't like it. He is losing himself. His journey with this wonderful woman and her son who offer him a chance at redemption and love is so moving. I like stories where people see the diamond in the rough and are willing to make the effort to get over the damaged flawed persons walls. I absolutely love love love the ending it is priceless and perfect. This has great character building and a great journey along with suspense, murder, mystery etc. It wasn't hard to figure out who the villians were but it was great anyway. It's funny how you don't mind the bad guys getting what they deserve. I hope we get to see more of Christopher and Millie in the Duke I loved their appearance in the Highlander. Can't wait for the Duke!!!See all 133 customer reviews... 10. Cards and Visits. Post Emily. 1922.
