We finally get to meet Dr. Ludendorff (I must be just as smart as him because I figured out the ships AIs problem before he came aboard) and he gets some of the ships problems fixed.Personally, I think this is Vaughn Heppner's best book. His writing style and thought processes telling the story have really matured. After 'Star Viking' I was ready to write him off as a hack, but THE LOST STARSHIP series has changed my mind.If you haven't read the first episode, that is ok the book gives enough background to get you up to speed. Also, the story is complete, no stupid cliffhangers.I highly recommend THE LOST COMMAND..3 of 3 people found the following review helpful.Interesting possibilities, but shallow charactersBy StilovI read this book because I felt the author had shown some promise with his first book of the series, The Lost Starship. The first book introduced a lo of characters, without giving us sufficient insight into their backgrounds to establish an emotional connection. This follow.up book also is lacking in characterization, but since we don't get introduced to a whole bunch of new characters we do learn more about the ones from the first book, enough so to want to read on into the third book of the series. Seen from a sales persective the author did his job.The Lost Command storyline is about a team of experts in their different fields trying to unlock the secrets of an alien starship in time to save a fleet of military starships from Earth from destruction at the hands of the New Men, some superhumans bred on a remote planet that want to destroy most of humanity and rebuild a superior genetic strain of humans. The storyline introduces more alien artefacts, alludes to alien involvement with the pyramids on Earth, develops the idea of longevity amongst a select few, struggles with the problems of multiethnicity in the form of the main character who needs to find out both what and who he is, but once again I ask myself why I should care about any of this. The author's lack of attention to his technology tree is extremely irritating, so as a reader I found myself having to constantly set aside "disbelief" when I hit a part of the story where the tech-level was so "low" as to be implausible in a century, let alone in the far off future this story is set..According to the speculative SF database http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/ea.cgi13144 the author has released 30 works in the last 2 and a half years, which may account for both the lack of characterization (since it takes time to get to know even the characters you invent yourself) and the inconsistencies (that can only be avoided by doing a heck of a lot of research and letting others proof your work). The author would be well advised to reduce his production rate in favor of more quality.Book 2 was sufficiently well written to make me want to read book 3 of the series, but I can't really recommend anyone who hasn't read book 1 already to buy any of these. There is a whole lot of better SF out there you want to read before you touch this universe.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.Almost quit readingBy C ShermanThe ending struggles to make up for the long stretches of depressing failures and victimization of all protagonists. If I hadn't had a long layover, I might have put it down, never to return. To me, a good space opera rises and falls, allowing the protagonists to fence with their foes as it goes. This story arc carries so much backstory that it loses that rhythm and becomes a dreary journey. The drumbeat of every "good" character repeatedly being outsmarted, out fought, and out-foxed by the seemingly invincible New Men and their minions becomes wearying as it continues on well past the halfway point of the book. In the end it is hard to feel satisfied by the climactic final battle, which itself seemed overly simplistic. As a stage-setter for a rip-roaring concluding book, this installment may be necessary, but it felt a lot like required-reading homework on it's own.
