I ended up starting a new collection folder on my Kindle just of books I want to review.Sarah MacLean’s Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake is set in London England 1813. It is a story full of balls, proper ladies and rakes. The ugly duckling who turns into a swan at least in the eyes of herself. I am a huge fan of stories written in that time period. I love to imagine myself as that heroine and the lifestyle.I give this book a huge 5 out of 5 stars. The writing was smooth and flowed from one topic to another without a hitch. Very few books make me actually cry or give me butterflies in my stomach, but this was one of them. The chemistry between the two main characters is off the charts and made it easy to imagine myself in the heroine’s place. This is one of my favorite books (I know I have so many), and I have read it multiple times.This book is well researched and the author does not make the mistake of trying to write something just to get readers. Granted she might not be one hundred percent right on her research, but I enjoy it because I don’t know specifics as someone who reads to read. She writes a story that flows and created characters that are relatable. The main character reminds me of myself in some ways and it was easy to imagine the story unfolding in front of me.I have read other reviews from readers and while this book is not for everyone because it is too cliche, that is exactly the reason I read this book and others like it. I consider myself pretty intelligent but for me it is all about the story and as long as it is not too outlandish and is believable I am not overly concerned about exact period correctness. This book was one of her early ones and I think that while she was still new to the scene she did a wonderful job. They are my favorite reads as some of you know. And Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake just fits the bill for being amazing. Sarah MacLean does a create job of setting up her series, Love by Numbers. This was the first book in that series, and I'll be reviewing the other 3 books available for review. Each are standalone and can be understood in any order without being confused. That's another reason I like historical romances. Most are a part of an overall series, but you don't have to follow the series to enjoy them.In this book, Calpurnia Hartwell has lived the last 28 years of her life playing by the rules, and it's gotten her no where except higher on the spinster shelf. Tired of her passive life, Callie decides to throw the rule book out and to finally live the life that's been passing her by. She makes a list of everything she wants to do- gamble, kiss someone passionately, smoke a cheroot, and more. And to start, she'll grab that kiss she's always dreamed of from none other than the man she's wanted for over a decade, Gabriel St. John, the Marques of Ralston.To get her kiss, she sneaks off in the night and into his bedchambers demanding her kiss. Gabriel is surprised to find her there in his rooms when he was expecting his mistress, but he doesn't let the opportunity pass by. He needs her highly valued respectability to aid in his new found half-sister's coming out. He agrees to give Callie her kiss if she'll do all she can to make sure Juliana takes the ton by storm. Gabriel wasn't expecting to enjoy the kiss so much, but now that he's had a taste of this new Callie, he can't help by want her, no matter how much he fights it.This book was a lot of fun. I really enjoyed watching Callie transform into the woman she's wanted to be and in doing so capturing Gabriel's attention. He is the definition of a rake, but he's trying to reform for the sake of his new sister. Unfortunately for him, the woman he's chosen to make sure she succeeds is turning into a bit of a rake herself...Gabriel decides to keep tabs on Callie during her adventures to ensure his sister's entrance into the ton isn't compromised, but each time they meet up things heat up beyond his control and all thoughts of being a gentlemen fly out the window.Callie is the Plain Jane who blossoms when she finds herself through her adventures. I think many women would be able to relate to her such as I did. Gabriel is the type of man I could see myself lusting after right along with Callie, and it's such a great feeling to know that all her hard work isn't for not. Each character has their flaws, but those flaws turn to beauty marks when they get to know each other and they realized their true love for each other despite the odds stacked against them.This is the second time I've read this book (the first time to review however), and I'm looking forward to book 2 in the Love by Numbers series- Ten Ways to be Adored When Landing a Lord.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.New favorite Regency romance!By DragonCeresOmg why did I not read this earlier I just loved this book so much!! I'm so going to read all other Sarah MacLean works now!!Our heroine, Lady Calpurnia Hartwell, was a wallflower and is now officially on the shelf. When her younger sister, Marianna, is engaged to the Duke of Rivington, Calpurnia decided it's time that she had some adventures and stop living by the boring rules society had set for her. Thus, Callie made a list of things she wanted to do that society would never allow a respectable lady to do. First thing on her list "Kiss someone-passionately" and who better to fulfill her wish than the Marquess of Ralston, the man she's been pining after for a decadeFor the first few chapters of the book, I wasn't sure about Callie, mainly because she tears up/cries so easily, whenever someone is criticizing her. She was also extremely insecure and repeatedly mention her plainness. This insecurity continues through the book, but eventually she "grew up" in that she gained a lot of confidence in herself and was able to speak her mind whenever other people are talking about her. Callie had a lot to learn about herself and about society so it was a lot of fun seeing her going on those adventures while "discovering" herself.Ralston is the consummate Regency rake compared to Callie's innocence. He's the perfect Regency hero with his aristocratic title and attitude. He has that commanding presence that I absolutely adore in my Regency heroes. When Callie came to him in the middle of the night, he couldn't think of a better person to introduce his newly found stepsister to the ton. So a bargain is struck. He'll kiss her and she will instruct his stepsister Juliana on English manners and introduce Juliana to the ton.As you can imagine, Ralston's world changes now with Callie in it. A lot of hilarity ensues as Callie tries to complete the items on her list and Ralston discovers Callie's antics. I'm surprised that Ralston didn't have a heart attack when finding Callie doing some of these things no respectable lady would even imagine doing.This is also one of the hotter historical romances I've read. The sexual tension between the characters are through the roof! And literally, every time Callie and Ralson are alone something wicked happens! One of the reason I love Regency is that every touch, every look, means something and Ms. MacLean used those little moments to full advantage! I loved every minute of it!!With all that said, this book wasn't perfect. Some of the plot devices are very predictable, especially near the end when there were a bunch of misunderstandings between the hero and heroine. You could see the conflicts that's going to happen from a mile away. In addition, there're a few things with the writing that can be improved. The author tend to use a lot of repetitive works, such as dryly and amused. It seemed half the time any character was talking they were speaking "dryly, wryly, or amused".Notwithstanding the problems, I highly enjoyed this book.
