The collection begins with an introduction on how Shulman heard of and became involved in the women's liberation movement in 1967. It is grouped in four sections: marriage and men, sex, writings, and late life. Shulman begins the first section with A Marriage Agreement, an essay she wrote in 1969 which defines the responsibilities of both spouses for raising their children and caring for their household. On her second essay, she reevaluates her marriage agreement, and on the third one, she writes about changes in communication between the sexes. The second section deals with women's sexuality and how it was recorded in movies, essays, and novels from the male's experience. The section on Writings aims to define what feminist fiction is and how readers perceive it. It discusses Schulman's writing of her novels, essays, and her biography of Emma Goldman as well as the work of women writers during the Beat period in the 1950's. In the last section, Schulman marvels at the sense of age and getting older, she writes of her stay in her family's seaside cabin, and of caring for her husband who fell from a sleeping loft and suffered a brain injury.In this provocative collection of essays, Schulman advocates women's social movements for equal rights and social justice. She shows that "each generation can do no more than add its bit to the endless river of consciousness and change". She achieves her goal by writing from personal experience as well as experiences of other women activists, and by doing thorough research on her topic. Schulman is considered a leading figure of second wave feminism. She has written on diverse topics such as marriage, sex, divorce, age, and reproductive choice.Overall, Schulman has accomplished a well-researched, argumentative and illustrative work that will attract feminists, law students, and other readers interested in women's issues.On a personal level, I really liked this collection and I can identify with the issues discussed. I grew up in a traditional generation where women had all the burden of housekeeping and child rearing, and men were the bread earners. The very first feministic essay I read was "I want a wife" by Judy Brady. I was so impressed with it because I could see myself in it and every woman who plays the role of "wife" and completes so many tasks without anyone realizing it.See all 1 customer reviews...
