It's a tough topic to cover, but I give no leniency to this book's inability to accomplish its goals.The book starts off well enough, explaining the basics involved in translational research and evidence based medical practice. However a few pages in, the book starts oversimplifying concepts, resulting in downstream misunderstanding. A perfect example in this book, is the explanation of p-values. This is a concept that is INTEGRAL to translational research, and the only attention it receives in the book is mere 22 lines of moderate-sized font, that actually explains very little. I'm not looking for definitions, I don't think anyone reading this book is. I can very easily Google/Wiki any of these concepts if I wanted a simple definition. I'm reading this book in search of understanding/explanation. This book gives the "what" but never provides the "why" or "how". Even the "simple examples" the book uses are not explained fully; in a subject where every detail matters, this book sure does leave a lot of the important ones out. Again, this is probably done with the intention of creating a minimalistic guide to the subject; eliminating as many potential pages as possible.The other big issue with this book is the language. It says on THE COVER, "Basic Tools for Medical Decision Making...". Yet the language of the book is anything but basic. It is unnecessarily complicated; I don't know how else to put this. Reading a sentence takes 2-3 tries, not because I'm stupid (I might be, who knows), but because halfway through a sentence, you've forgotten the point trying to be made. Also, if it's expected that terms and words inherent to the subject are going to be used, they better be explained. Throwing around terms without explaining them fully prevents me from understanding anything being discussed. Like I said before, I can appreciate that the goal was to keep this short and to the point, but every page that I don't understand because of terms or concepts that went unexplained, leaves me even more confused than the at the start. Another issue, is the minimal effort to verbally explain mathematical or statistical relationships. Simply writing an equation and saying, "this is what this equation is called," does nothing to explain what that equation represents; what it means in terms of real world application. Steven Hawking was able to explain some of the most complex cosmo-physical topics known to man, in his book, A Brief History of Time, and he only included a single equation (E=mc^2)!I would imagine that the majority of people buying this book are not established experts in the field of biostats, stat analysis, or translational research/evidenced based medicine; otherwise they wouldn't be buying a basic book that explains those topics. So it CANNOT be assumed that the reader knows much about this topic prior to an explanation.I'm sorry to have written such a scathing review. But my frustration in reading this book was too much to bear, especially seeing as how it cost $28 and is barely bigger than the manual that came with my TV.
