But when the book assumes you are taking insulin or Metformin and can indulge in a treat, it's really not a cookbook for diabetics. Most of the recipes have carb counts over my daily limit, let alone one dessert after one meal.Depending on substitute sugars really doesn't do it for me, either. Sugar alcohols cause gastric distress, and using all those artificial sweeteners just makes me crave more sugar.If you don't mind using medication to counteract what you just ate, you'll enjoy the book. If you are a diet-controlled diabetic, it's not a helpful choice.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.Wonderful yummy dessert recipes for diabetics!By Rita ReaderLet's face it, I am incredibly into sweets and desserts, and a month ago when I got the diagnoses of being diabetic, there was a part of me that thought I would never get to enjoy desserts again. But after I got this book and some others, and began cooking this way, I have to say it has not even been a struggle to eat like a healthy diabetic. Perhaps the concern over the disease is a powerful motivation, but with this and other terrific recipes I haven't felt deprived at all. One of my favorites in the book is called "Cranberry Brunch Cake." It was so good, but I found myself thinking I could make it again without the cranberries and have a nice fluffy white cake that won't bother the blood sugar. As a cake fan, it was nice to find it. There is also a white frosting recipe too that would be great on it I am sure but I haven't tried it yet. I also made the Havana Banana cake and both my husband and I loved it. There is a sweet potato pie recipe that I cannot wait to try. I used to be the one in the family that always was know for making the heavenly desserts, well now I still plan to make them and see how many in the family realize they are low in sugar. If you are serious about managing your disease and not being deprived, this is the book for you.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful.No Way.By Victoria QuintanillaToo much reliance on artificial sweeteners. I will not be making anything from this book, in fact it went into the recycling bin as soon as I perused it. Artificial sweeteners have a negative effect on metabolism, and I just cannot see how these recipes help diabetics, who are struggling not just with sugars, but with carb load as well. Some of these recipes have an obscene amount of total sugar grams, and are just as high in carbs. No thanks, will stick to my 72% chocolate in tiny amounts.
