Part detailed history of the impact of the Orpheus myth and part philosophy of life and death. Wroe uses the Orpheus myth as a way of understanding themes that have surpassed our understanding throughout history. Artistic genius is one of those themes. She spends a lot of time on Orpheus' musical genius, as well as Rilke's - who was inspired by Orpheus. Her treatment of death is the topic that moved me the most.
