LewisBy Charlotte AshlockThe first thing you need to know, is Seth Adam Smith is the American C.S. Lewis: his seemingly light-hearted fantasy actually cloaks poignant and deeply touching Christian themes of forgiveness and redemption. Like the Narnia books, the book is deceptively simple and easy to read, with plenty of humor, color, and fun. Underneath, there are deep philosophical lessons about the nature of good and evil, which you receive without even realizing you're getting them. Although a wicked villain is defeated in the end, the hero's real enemies are self-doubt and despair. And just as C.S. Lewis chooses to redeem his Edmund character, one of the traitors in this book is unexpectedly redeemed. I feel like the real heroes of the book are the character's parents. Their brave choices to live giving lives have a ripple effect on so many other characters. This book had me both laughing and crying and I know it will make you do the same. If you are a fan of American history, you will have extra appreciation for the book. It is a book you don't want to put down, at times touching, other times exciting, and at others just a great adventure. Smith creates a world underneath 18th century Boston filled with magic, dark and light. The parts about the Van Winkle family were a particular highlight, showing people with love and compassion for everyone they met. As Rip comes into his own understanding of his peculiar powers, he gets caught up in a whirlwind of adventures and perils. Apparently a print version is forthcoming with great illustrations--I am looking forward to getting that edition too.This is a book that can be enjoyed both by adults and children. In fact, here is the review from my 11 year old daughter:This story is told by Rip Van Winkle who was found as a baby in a grave. Nearly dead, he was taken in by the Van Winkles who had no children of their own. Rip could speak to plants and when he was about 8 years old he made a pumpkin grow as tall as his father.Seth Adam Smith uses very descriptive language in the book. I liked how the plot was really unique. I mean, who else could think up pumpkin lanterns The book was really hard to put down. I went to my sister’s concert and I tried to read the entire time!
